BMW is your best option, if you are looking for a sporty stock car.

Understanding the BMW brand is very easy. All cars are organised from the smallest series 1 up to the largest series 8. In front of the number, you have different letters to categorise the car. No letter in front of the number means that it is a regular coupe, hatchback, sedan or estate. But if it starts with the letter X, then it is an SUV. You now also have models starting with “i”, these are all the new fully electric models by BMW. Finally, you have the letter “M” that stands for Motorsport and are the performance versions of the series. The letters are mixed together to form a model. For example, the BMW X5 M or BMW i40 M.

Haggling for a deal is getting harder with new cars, especially stock cars. Dealerships opt for a fixed price and predefine the maximum discount they want to give to buyers. M for Motorsport

Have you ever noticed “M” badges on a BMW before? The letter M stands for Motorsport and goes a long way back in the 1960s when BMW first used it for their racing program. The first ever Motorsport BMW came in 1978 with the M1. Nowadays you will see the badge “M” on nearly every other BMW.

There is a huge misconception of a BMW M-Sport and an actual M-car. An M-Sport car is a trim that you can have for a sportier look and drive. You can have an M-Sport on any engine configuration. While an M car is an exclusive model produced by BMW Motorsport, showcasing the pinnacle of automotive performance for a specific BMW model. If you are looking for the most hardcore BMW M-car then you should look for the “CS” model standing for “Competition Sport”.

Electric sports cars

BMW was one of the first European car brands that believed in the future of electric mobility. But surely the first to practice electric mobility with sports cars. The BMW i8 is the first hybrid sports car that was available on the market since 2014. Since then, the “i” division of BMW has evolved with more promising models and also the M division has given its touch to “i” models.

For example, the BMW i4 M50 is first of many more “i” models getting a Motorsport treatment. The i4 M50 can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds from a motor producing 544 horsepower. It performs with a respectable range of 520km. If you are tired from only having a Tesla as option, then do keep an eye on BMW as they are developing more i-performance M cars.

Front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and xDrive

For decades long, BMW and rear wheel drive was a long living love story that could never be separated. It still is in the heart of the brand, that a rear-wheel-drive car is a proper BMW. But with time, you need to evolve and accept the user of other technologies that in some cases do the job better.

Take for example snow, the worst condition you can find a BMW in. Rear wheel drive on snow is tricky because the rear of the car is usually lighter. So, the rear tires do not find much traction and keep spinning in the snow. Also, when taking corners, the rear is often the first thing to spin during acceleration. Causing the BMW to drift uncontrollably.

To solve this, your best case is four-wheel drive. All four wheels are powered and manage throttle input independently. So one tire can support the other when the car is in need of more traction. In very heavy winter conditions, all four wheels accelerating will pull the car forward easily then two wheels pulling forward. BMW came in much later with this technology, but they have improved it so much that now M cars are using four-wheel drive. BMW calls it xDrive and is available only with certain engine configurations. Having four-wheel drive is crucial for stability and acceleration performance. The new BMW M cars with four-wheel drive, perform so well because of the added traction. When launching the car, all wheels have traction to pull the car forward in the most stable and consistent way.

Front wheel drive is rare with BMW and is only available in the 1-series and 2-Series, except of the 2-Series coupe. The reason why BMW added front wheel drive, is because of financial reasons. Building a front wheel drive car is much cheaper than rear wheel drive. So their entry level cars are now more accessible then before. Some claim that their entry level clients were also not aware whether the car is front or rear wheel drive. Meaning, that their customers in entry level cars are not so technical in these details. So, switching to a front wheel car will probably go unnoticed.

However, BMW will remain loyal to rear wheel cars or xDrive cars with rear wheel bias. They know that their customers prioritise driving pleasure and that is only achieved with a proper drivetrain setup. Now that most cars are going to be electric in the future, front wheel drive cars will not exist for very long at BMW.

How much discount on a new BMW?

The maximum discount on a new BMW stock car in Belgium is 30% and a minimum of around 10%. The discount rate depends on how old the model is. New BMW models that are just released start from around 10% discount, but it can go down in rare cases to around 5% discount. Older BMW models, especially those that are already replaced with a newer model go for maximum 30%.

In the Belgian stock car market, BMW gives the highest discount on cars. Having 30% off is a huge number and a very good deal for any stock car buyer.

How to know you got a good deal?

For an older BMW stock car that has already been replaced, anything above 25% discount can be considered as a good deal. For stock cars that will be replaced within two years or so, look for 20% or more discount. For very new models, you should look for anything over 10%. Keep in mind, that a 30% discounted car that is being replaced, is equal to a 10% discounted new car.

Time is a depreciating value with cars, even if the car is brand new with time it drops in value. The technology and design of a car gets older. So, don’t compare the discount on a new model with the discount on an older model. Compare the discount rates of the same model.
