BMW • 7 Series and i7

The new BMW 7 Series has redefined the face of the brand with quite a dramatic new design approach. The grille is now bigger than ever before, with splitted headlight designs and a curvier shape. Looking back at the history of the brand, the new BMW 7 Series design is bringing a lot of heritage design cues. It looks like a futuristic BMW design that someone would draw back in the 80's.

It's not only the exterior that received a dramatic change, the interior is an incredible step forward in the automotive industry. Never before did anyone think of fitting a 31 inch 8K curved theatre screen in the back. So instead of two individual screens fitted to the back of the seats, you now have a huge screen that can fold out from the top.

1. Design

BMW wants to differentiate its cars from the rest of the market through daring designs that embrace their identity. The large grille has been their most noticeable change with their latest new models such as the BMW 4 Series or the BMW iX electric SUV. But now that most of us have accepted the dramatic kidney grille size, it's time for the next step in BMW's new design identity.

Please welcome split headlights, a trend you may have found in a funky Citroën or a Hyundai. Now BMW wants to highlight their cars with four seperate light clusters in the front, splitting daytime running lights with the main beams. As design is subjective, we believe this new design strategy will attract buyers that want something different and unique.

If you want a safe design, you would be better off with the likes of an Audi or Mercedes-Benz. The BMW of the future is daring, bold and in your face!

Depending on the exterior colour, the design suits the car very well, especially in a full blacked out design.

The new 7 series and electric i7 is more rounded than the old car. That is of course to improve its drag coefficient, but it's still much more boxier than the design of the Mercedes-Benz EQS.

The design is also much more simpler with a clean exterior design. There is much less going on compared to the older model where you had chrome accents on the side of the car and the rear. That is gone and it looks much cleaner especially with the flush doorhandles.

You also get new futuristic looking wheels, starting from 19-inch all the way up to 22-inch.

The overall design of the new 7 Series is very different and requires getting used to. It's not particularly beautiful or classy compared to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. But BMW had to try much harder to differentiate itself from the class leading luxury limousine (S-Class). The BMW 7 Series was always the alternative option for someone that wanted something different, even if the design wasn't as nice compared to the S-Class. Same goes for the Audi A8.

The BMW 7 Series is now so different, it is made especially for those that always wanted to stand out as different compared to the rest of the crowd. With the new 7 Series and i7, you will definitely be standing out!

2. Interior

Here's where BMW went all out. The interior of the new 7 Series and i7 is leaps and bounds ahead of any automotive company in the world.

The overall design is very minimalist, yet sophisticated. The new 7 Series has curved drivers display with touch screen. The UX/UI is impeccable and very crisp thanks to the high pixel dense screen. Not everything is touchscreen though, the interface is still manageable through a traditional iDrive wheel in the center with plenty of buttons for quick shortcuts.

New with the 7 Series and i7 is sattelite navigation with augmented reality such as on a Mercedes-Benz.

What is also an incredible improvement is the ambient lighting. Currently, all ambient light designs are stretches of light going through dashboards, doors and center consoles. They are either clean strips of LED (Audi & BMW) or with more fade to it (Mercedes-Benz). With the new 7 Series, BMW went to another level of ambient lights by blend of different applications.

You have LED strips on the doors and center console. But on the dashboard you have ambient light, housed within a glass crystal like panel. It is so neatly integrated, giving the most luxurious vibe one could experience in a car at night. Alongside this, we have small detail touched to the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system. The panoramic roof also is litted with a unique BMW pattern.

There is also a possibility to option your seats with vegan fabric such as cashmere wool.

3. Theathre screen

The 31-inch, 8K resolution, curved screen that folds down from the roof is the highlight of the interior. It's so strange to think that nobody ever though of this solution, instead of the two small screens behind the headrest. This solution is definitely a better experience for the passengers in the rear, being able to watch a movie on full screen in the back and the comfort of the surround sound Bowers & Wilkins system.

4. Motors and batteries

The BMW i7 will be available with one single motor configuration at launch  and it's called the xDrive60. This motor has a size of 101kWh, ouputing 544hp from the two motors combined. What is more impressive is the charging time. In just 10 minutes of fast charging, you will be given a 170km range. The total range of the xDrive60 motor is around 600km WLTP. The acceleration from 0 to 100km/h with the xDrive60 will happen in 4.7 seconds.

In comparison to the Mercedes-Benz EQS, the new BMW i7 with the xDrive60 motor is slightly slower and less in range. BMW is however going to release a high performance variant with the M70 xDrive producing 660hp and an acceleration to 100km/h in just over 3 seconds.

The BMW i7 with the M70 xDrive motor will be available as a stock car on the mycarena search engine in 2023.

5. Engines

If you are not ready to buy a fully electric luxury limousine yet, then BMW is still offering the option of a combustion engine with the tradition 7 Series.

The BMW brand is a strong believer of combustion engines and is not cancelling developments for new engines. It believes that the market for combustion engines will still exist, especially in countries where long distance travelling is very common with low charging infrastructure.

In Europe there will be 3 combustion engines available and all of them equipped with some sort of electrification for improved efficiency. The 3 engines are the following:

740d: twin-turbo straight six diesel engine, with a mild-hybrid system and 300hp, 0-100km/h in 6.3 seconds.
750e hybrid: four-wheel-drive, twin-turbo straight six petrol engine, with a hybrid system and combined 490hp, 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds.
M760e hybrid: four-wheel-drive, twin-turbo straight six petrol engine, with a hybrid system and combined 571hp, 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds.

6. Chassis

BMW its approach to electrification of cars is very different to other manufacturers that develop completely new platforms for electric cars only. Mercedes-Benz for example has two different chassis' for their electric S-Class, there's the traditional S-Class and the EQS. Both are completely different cars inside and out.

BMW develops a single chassis that will work for both a combustion engine and a fully electric powertrain. This manufacturing concept was first introduced with the BMW 4 series gran coupé and i4. Both identical cars but with two very different powertrains.

With this strategy, the BMW model line-up is easier to understand. No extra models are created to supply BMW customers with a range of electric cars. Instead, all future BMW models will come with a traditional combustion engine and a fully electric model.

7. Long wheelbase

In the past the BMW 7 Series was released in a normal wheelbase and long wheelbase model. That has changed with the new BMW 7 Series and i7. The newest model comes with a long wheelbase only, whether you like it or not. The new car is 1cm longer and 5cm taller compared to the previous long wheelbase 7 Series. The current 7 Series is very massive. If you want a slightly shorter luxurious car, the latest S-Class is available in a short and long wheelbase option.

8. Suspension

The all new 7 Series comes with self-leveling adaptive air suspension as standard. The suspension can be considered a "smart-suspension" that not only improves handling or comfort but also efficiency. The car raises or lowers, according to speed for maximum efficiency. It can also detect obstacles before driving over it.

You can also option the new 7 Series with rear-wheel steering. On slow speeds it can improve your turning radius and on high speeds it will improve stability.

9. Driving

The new BMW 7 Series and i7 are undoubtedly luxurious cars you want to be chauffeured in. The rear seat entertainment and luxury will keep many owners away from driving it. However, the 7 Series will not be a true BMW if it hasn't got great driving dynamics. It will definitely not be the sportiest car to drive, but it will have loads of driving assistance features for the most comfortable drive.

BMW developed a new adaptive cruise control that works up to a speed of 200km/h. The new ACC can accelerate, brake, steer and change lanes for you. It will use GPS to know when to slow down or accelerate. It will also automatically stop when it detects a red light. In the USA, drivers can use the adaptive cruise control without any drivers' input up to 130km/h.

10. Price

The price of the new BMW 7 Series and i7 will be similar to what you will pay for a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or Mercedes-Benz EQS. The starting price of the new BMW 7 Series will be €120.000 euro.

11. Discount

The new BMW 7 Series and i7 will start with very low discounts given by dealerships. It will start from 3% in the first 6 months and gradually increase up to 18% by 2024. So if you are looking for a great deal, we recommend waiting a year or so before purchasing your new BMW 7 Series, the early models will be sold with a very high price!
