The Volkswagen ID.Buzz is an all-electric mpv, based on the same platform as the electric ID.4 SUV. The ID.Buzz is the electric and modern evolution of the traditional T1 van. Volkswagen already has a very famous modern mpv, the T6 - but they are not as hip and retro as this electric mpv van. The ID.Buzz is a hip and cool electric mpv. But if you're looking for a large and practical mpv, Volkswagen's T-Series of mpv cars is a better choice. The new T7 is now also available as a hybrid.

1. Design

The design of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz is very futuristic and retro. The body of the ID.Buzz is very similar to the classic T1 minivan. The high bodywork with narrow windows and a short overhang make for very modern looks. To make it even more retro, you can have the ID.Buzz in two contrasting colours like the classic T1 minivan.

At the front there is a big Volkswagen logo with the possibility of matrix LED lighting. At the bottom of the bumper you have a very unique design with a diamond pattern. The front is almost flat, just like the classic T1 van. This design of course makes it possible to make so much space in the interior.

The rims as shown are 21 inch rims that complete the look. These are the largest size rims, so a standard model will be available with smaller rims.

Volkswagen wants to attract new buyers with the new retro and modern design. According to the brand, this is not a boring monovolume car, but a justified alternative to a cool SUV or station wagon. The ID.Buzz offers a lot of space, has a high seating position like an SUV and looks very good!

2. Interior

In terms of size, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz is similar to the length and width of a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series or Audi A4. So it is not very large, but thanks to its unique design there is a lot of room inside.

The boot in the back is over 1,121 litres! In comparison to an estate car of the same size, this is no less than 2.5 times larger! This is thanks to the height of the car and its rectangular design. With the rear row folded down, there is even more room with 2,205 litres of total space.

A common design element is the diamond pattern you could see on the front bumper. This pattern can be found in many places in the interior. For example on the door sills, the speakers and as accents in the interior.

Everywhere in the interior, you will find many quirky and playful features that make the ID.Buzz so different. For example, the accelerator and brake pedal is a start/pause button like on a music player. Here and there you have a smiley emoji in the interior or ID.Buzz contour icons embossed on the sides.

The interior design is very similar to all other ID models from Volkswagen. However, the seating position is much higher than that of an ID.4 or 5. Thanks to the independent armrests integrated in both front seats, this makes for a very comfortable position. Something you would rather experience in a Land Rover Range Rover.

The centre console is an insert that can be removed. This gives the flexibility for people who want to use this space for something else. For example, a large bag that you want to put between them or if you want quick access to the back seat.

The interior is very practically organised. The cup holders are neatly integrated into the dasboard. Above the spacious glove compartment, you have an extra storage space with grip-resistant inlay. The removable central console also has many practical cupboards to store everything neatly.

The interior of the ID.Buzz has really been given a lot of thought!

3. Motors and batteries

The new Volkswagen ID.Buzz will be introduced with rear-wheel drive only. The 77kWh battery, combined with the single 204hp engine in the rear, will give a range of 350km in real life. Volkswagen itself reports a range of 425km, but we all know that is almost impossible to achieve.

We do not expect new engines and batteries until next year. There is already talk of a four wheel drive system with an engine on each axle.

4. Chassis

The chassis is based on that of the ID.4 and ID.5. Thanks to the flexible platform, Volkswagen can produce many different electric models and thus share production costs. The production process is also much simpler and several models can be produced on the same production line.

The ID.Buzz chassis has a very similar driving experience to that of a normal electric SUV like the ID.4 or 5. The batteries underneath provide an ideal balance and low centre of gravity. A normal monovolume car has the motor positioned quite high up, making steering less than pleasant. You won't have this with the ID.Buzz and Volkswagen's electric platform.

5. Suspension

Almost all modern new cars come with the option of rear-wheel steering. These are the rear wheels that can turn with the car for a reduced turning circle. Unfortunately, this option is not available for any ID model and therefore not for the ID.Buzz.

Still, this should not be a problem because the ID.Buzz has a very good turning circle for its size. On a reasonably wide two-lane road you could turn around in one go.

6. Driving

The ID.Buzz drives very pleasantly on the road. Firstly, it is a fully electric car, which allows you to zoom silently through the city. The steering wheel is very light, making cornering feel pleasant and effortless. The brakes are normal and soft as you would expect from a normal car. You can control the intensity of regenerative braking yourself via the on-board computer, but it is not possible to drive with only the accelerator as you can in a Tesla. Regenerative braking is not strong enough to come to a complete stop.

It is also possible to drive faster, but you are limited to a maximum speed of 145 km/h. One would expect that a monovolume car would bring more wind noise with it. This is not really the case on the motorway, you notice as much noise as with an SUV.

Thanks to the high seating position, the ID.Buzz is a very pleasant car. In combination with ideal comfort and road handling, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz is a wonderful car to drive.
