Mercedes-Benz GLC stock cars - 3% discount, from €60.000

The new Mercedes-Benz GLC is the SUV version of the new C-Class sedan and estate. With the new GLC, the design has been heavily improved to the new design language of Mercedes-Benz that found its way through the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The S-Class design is in the luxury sedan segment arguably the best looking design in existence. Neither BMW or Audi match with the incredible design work of the latest and greatest flagship car from Mercedes-Benz (S-Class).

As you would expect, lower tier models receive a design upgrade that is based on their flagship models and in this case that's the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The first model that received a redesign based on the flagship Mercedes-Benz is the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The car literally looks like a smaller S-Class with a very similar exterior and interior design. Albeit smaller in scalle from all angles.

The GLC is based on the C-Class and thus received a similar design to the current new C-Class. An elegant redesigned front-end with slimmer and longer headlights. The rear also received a heavy redesign with longer sophisticated fully LED taillights. The interior is then very similar to what you find in the regular C-Class, a dual screen setup integrated in a very beautiful dashboard design.

Mercedes is at their top of their game when it's coming to design. Their design for traditional internal combustion engine cars is appreciated and liked by many. Continue to read this article as we cover everything you need to know about the new Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV.

1. Design

The design of the new Mercedes-Benz GLC is based on the C-Class that is again based on the flagship S-Class. The new exterior design of Mercedes-Benz is stunning and elegant. It has a perfect blance of classiness, luxury and sportiness. The three elements can be enhanced based on the exterior trim you select.

Most people would pick the AMG line exterior trim that enhances the sportiness of the car. With the AMG line trim you receive a completely redesigned and sportier bodywork. This includes the front bumper, rear bumper and sideskirts. The wheels are also sportier and the grille is much different too to the standard Avantgarde luxury trim.

The headlights are sleeker and more reminiscent to the EQS/EQE electric luxury saloon. While the regular S-Class headlights are detached from the grille, the headlights of the EQS and this GLC are attached to the grille. The headlights received a technological upgrade to the outgoing model with new DIGITAL LIGHTS, these are LED lights that are able to project animations on the road. The headlight units are so advanced and precise at night. Besides the projecting of animations, the improvement of adaptive headlights will be a noticeable gain. Rear lights are also redesigned with new LED technology. They are also longer and sleeker.

The new design did increase the dimensions of the car compared to the outgoing model. It is approximately 6cm longer and 4mm lower than its predecessor. The track widths have been increased by 6 mm at the front and 23 mm at the rear.

2. Interior

Here's where Mercedes-Benz cars really excel, the fresh new interior of the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

The design of the interior is an enormous upgrade to the outgoing model. The major difference is of course the neatly integrated infotainment screens. You have a fully digital drivers display and a center screen that is integrated with the center console.

Another big change is the availability of vegan leather or also known as leatherette. This is an animal-free fabric that mimics the qualities of leather. Be aware that leatherette is still not of same quality to regular leather and while it may be more animal friendly, it isn't exactly environmentally friendly. The production of leatherette requires polyurethane and fossil fuel-based chemicals used during the manufacturing process.

The seating position and overall ambience is more of an evolution to the previous GLC. You will feel a lot of similarities to the previous GLC, although with a heavy technology and design upgrades.

Overall the interior is roomy and a joy to be in. It is definitely an interior that will look modern for the next 5 years to come.

3. Boot space

The boot space has been increased thanks to the rear overhang. It is now 70 litres larger compared to the preceding model with 620 litres in total. You can also fold the rear seats in a 40:20:40 ratio to increase boot space. These can be electrically folded by pushing switches on the left and right side of the rear seat backrest or through controls in the boot. Folding the seats back into position has to be done by hand.

4. Practicality

The new Mercedes-Benz GLC has increased slightly in size compared to its predecessor. This results in more space for luggage in the back but also space for passengers has increased. Being an SUV comes with the trait of a lot more headroom compared to a similar classed sedan or estate.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC has the EASY-PACK electric tailgate as standard. With this feature it automatically closes and opens the boot. It now also has a compartment under the loading area to store the roller blind neatly.

What is less practical though is the increased amount of touch switches and touch screens. Both these advancements are nice to look at but less practical to use when driving. You need to look at the switches to see what button you are pressing on.

5. Motors

All engines for the new GLC are electrified. Either as a plug-in hybrid or a mild hybrid.

The engines available are petrol or diesel, all of them being a four cylinder motor.

Four engines are mild hybrid engines. The mild hybrid technology is a smaller electric system that gives extra power to the traditional combustion engine. The electric power is used on specific timings where the engine needs most support, such as low rpm acceleration.

Three other engines are plug-in hybrids, these have large scale motors to power the car on electrical power only. The range is limited to not more than a 100 kilometers (WLTP) on full electric power.

6. Driving

The driving dynamics of the new Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV is more focused towards luxury. So don't expect the car to handle like a sportscar, but instead expect a soft ride for long comfortable journeys.

The new GLC is also available with airsuspension also known as AIRMATIC. This optional extra will give the car an even more comfortable suspension as it will soften out imperfections of the road. Airsuspensions give the "wafting" feel you have in more high-end luxury cars such as in a Rolls-Royce or Bentley. You feel like driving on clouds or going over waves with your luxury yacht.

Also new with this GLC is rear-axle steering. On lower speeds the rear axle will turn in the opposite direction to reduce the turning circle by 80cm. When the speed exceed 60 kmph or more, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front wheels by up to 4.5 degrees. This increases the handling stability and driving safety at higher speeds, and during fast lane changes or sudden evasive manoeuvres.

7. Safety

Several safety improvements have been added to the new Mercedes-Benz GLC.

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC can now react to stationary vehicles on the road at speeds up to 100kmph (previously 60kmph).

Active Steering Assist now works on the road at speeds up to 210kmph.

Traffic Sign Assist now recognises signs on overhead gantries and at roadworks. It can also detect many more road signs, such as "when wet" signs.

There is now a 360° camera option that gives an angle of the car from all directions. It's now also available with a "transparent bonnet" that shows you a live view from under the car.
